Biography :

Author George Smith is proud to be a lifelong New Jersey resident. However, his first book, “The Journey of the Little Red Boat,” originated in Maine, where George’s grandparents were born and raised and where George, his siblings and their families have a summer home near the coast. There they enjoy walking, eating lobster, relaxing in the sun on the warm, flat rocks along the shore, swimming in a nearby cove where the water is actually fairly warm, visiting the sites in this beautiful state, and rescuing any little red boats that drift into the cove.

For his second book “Spike, The Amazing Chicken,” George traveled out West, where his cousins have a ranchette on which Spike the chicken lives. As you will see from reading the book, Spike is a very unusual, amazing chicken. The information about Spike that is true has been listed as nonfiction in the front material in this book. The information about Spike that is fictitious and was added by the author to make the story even more fun and interesting is also listed in the front material in this book.

The author is currently working on a science oriented book on lobsters which should be out by this summer.

Book Review :

Westfield Leader and Scotch-Plains Fanwood TIMES, “Ties to Maine Anchor First-Time Author” By Marylou Morano

His summer home in Maine has inspired a former Westfield resident to write a children’s book as a gift to his granddaughter.
“The Journey of the Little Red Boat” highlights the activities of Smith’s granddaughter, Grace, when she visits the family home on the Medomak River in central Maine, near the coast. Grace is a prominent character in the book.
The things depicted in the book-playing games at the kitchen table, walking among the rocks looking for minnows and baby crabs trapped in pools of water- are the things I did as teenager. They are what my children did when they were growing up.
“I had just retired and was mulling what I would really like to do with my newly found free time. The book was also a way to write about an area of Maine that I love…”
“I enjoy visiting schools and discussing the book and the topic of creative writing with elementary school children. Helping children improve their writing skills and engage their imaginations is very satisfying.”
