Book Review :

Winter Fire is a rousing story of a man and a woman drawn to each other despite unusual circumstances.

Zara Grey was captured by the Seneca at an early age. All she knows is life as an Indian. Soldiers find her and return her to her uncle’s home, there to be ‘reintroduced’ to society. Rufus Grey has no tolerance for his niece, who doesn’t speak English and has strange, non-white, ways. Zara tries to escape more than once, but is brought back each time. Finally her cousin gives her the way out, but she is recaptured by her uncle. When he punishes her by beating her and then attempting rape her, she grabs a scythe and slashes at him, then flees into the woods.

Ethan Caine is out in the woods, tending his traps when he sees the woman on the ice. He tries to shout a warning, but startles her and she falls through the ice. When Ethan rescues Zara, he gets more than he bargained for, as she is indirectly responsible for the death of his father. He then realizes that she’s in need of help, which he sets out to do. From there, their lives are intertwined and the rest of the story unfolds.

Kathy Fischer-Brown has woven a well-crafted story of the hates and desires of the people in this time period. She has skillfully managed to convey the prejudice people had against a people they didn’t understand, and makes the reader feel as if they are within the story. From the beginning of the book, this reviewer was drawn in. It was a quick read, but one that was thoroughly captivating. It is a well thought out interpretation of the way people react to unusual circumstances. © Love Romances, 2001-2002.
