From the strangling of a midwife perceived to be a witch in 1880s Scotland to thwarted love and the tragedy of incest in West Virginia during the depression, accurate history is enhanced by elements of magical realism in this tale of five generations as ancient as the greek tragedies and as modern as the daily news.

Biography :
Sandra Shwayder Sanchez is a retired attorney living in the mountains of Colorado. During her twenty years of legal practice she worked primarily in Juvenile Court with families and also represented victims of domestic abuse. While Stillbird is a myth-like representation of different kinds of violence against women, the author has brought her professional experience to bear to make this an authentic protrayal of perpetrators as well as the victims. The author is grateful to clients who overcame suffering and were able to take joy in the small daily blessings of their world. The short stories of Shwayder Sanchez have appeared in the print literary journals: The Long Story, The Healing Muse, Zone 3 and the online literary journals: www.storyglossia.com and www.thedublinquarterly.com. and www.cantaraville.com. Her first novel, The Nun, was published by Plain View Press in 1992 and another book, Three Novellas, was just published by The Wessex Collective (www.wessexcollective.com) and appears on this site.
Book Review :
"The way Sanchez integrates the natural world with character and personality and actual events is masterful. She moves around in time, picks up threads and makes connections among the characters in a seemingly effortless manner and the result is stunningly beautiful. For me the book was a gift." Gloria De Vidas Kirchheimer, author of Goodbye Evil Eye.
Sanchez' writing style is exquisite. Her flawless prose flows sometimes beautiful, sometimes disturbing but always memorable. Stillbird is a novel I highly recommend for the serious reader." Mayra Calvani in The Bloomsbury Review
"Stillbird has the resonance of an epic tale and the immediacy of a gripping story line. Sanches reveals an acute sense of place and season as well as a rich appreciation for history. Through nuanced characterization and dramatic suspense, Sanchez draws us into a comlex and fascinating world. Stillbird shows us that Sandra Shwayder Sanchez is a writer to watch for." Valerie Miner, author of A Walking Fire, Abundant Light, East of Eden, Winter's Edge.
