Hebe is a young woman struggling to reconcile opposing views of the world. She is haunted by memories of a wild river boy who befriended her when she was a child and taught her to see nature with new eyes.
She lost touch with him after a disastrous flood and longs to see him again. He came from an ancient race that lives hidden among us. Now, returning to her childhood haunts, she finds his secret world is under threat.
Her story wanders the borders of fact and folklore, of science and art, of sanity and madness, as she catches glimpses of the power that draws the silent people back to their ancient roots.
Yvonne Jerrold was born in Washington DC and grew up in Dublin, Ireland. The unpredictable river in her novel, Silent People: Hearing the Call of the Dodder, was inspired by the Dodder river which flows fast down the Wicklow mountains and through the city of Dublin.
She worked in many different jobs before taking up writing, including as a trainee milliner, a carpenter and joiner, an architect and a garden designer. She also paints a little and plant trees. She is creating a small woodland of native trees in Cambridgeshire, England, where she lives. You can see its progress on her website www.yvonnejerrold.com.
Book Review :
Yvonne Jerrold has written a beautiful story that makes you contemplate how reality is different for everyone because it is based on each person's own view of the world. In addition to the thought-provoking ideas that arise in the story, Jerrold has a gift of writing descriptions in such a way that brings the story to life... Everything is colorful and feels alive. Silent People is an unusual story that should not be missed. [from Paige Lovitt's review on www.readersviews.com] An unusual and thought-provoking story told in a clear and flowing style. The narrative is enhanced in places evocative passages of almost poetic quality. Thoroughly recommended. [Brimstone "Yellow" (UK) on Amazon.co.uk]
