April 2007 - Article: Increase Your Page Rank - By the bookhitch staff

For those of you who are scratching your heads (been there) your page rank is very important, especially when it comes to searching on Google.

For example, if you search for books, a website with a higher page rank than yours will show up first. If your site only has a page rank of 2 (on a scale of 1-10 where 10 is the highest), versus a site that has 9, then your website may show up on page 32 versus the first page of Google results.

Page rank is determined by how many websites link to yours, and the page rank of the websites that link to yours (along with many other factors). Although the exact algorithms are not known, and not for want of trying, there are ways that you can increase your websites page ranking. If you want to find out your page rank then its as simple as searching for “page rank” in your favorite search engine, or go to websites such as checkpagerank.com, and typing in your website URL.

Did you know that search engines get some of their information from larger directories? Google, and many other search engines, can find information about websites through an open directory called dmoz (http://dmoz.org/). If you add your link to the dmoz directory, that is one more direct link to your website that will, in turn, help to increase your page rank.

For those of you still scratching your heads, simply go to the dmoz directory and think like a consumer who was trying to reach your book (s). You may start by clicking on the shopping category, followed by books, followed by the genre that best describes your book. If dmoz is looking for web addresses to add to these categories then you will see a “suggest URL” button at the top of the screen. So, why not suggest yours? It may take a while for your website to show up on the directory, but it will be worth it.

If you are a bookhitch subscriber, add bookhitch.com to your website. We already have links to yours!
